How I think about teaching, knowledge,and the systems shaping both.

My approach begins with the learner, but it does not end in the classroom. It follows knowledge outward—to curricula, institutions, technologies, and the structures of power that decide what education can become.

Three commitments

A philosophy built to evolve.

I do not believe one theory can account for the complexity of learning. My practice draws from empirical, developmental, constructivist, humanistic, and critical traditions.

Learners are active agents.

Students do not arrive as empty vessels. They bring histories, knowledge, identities, and purposes that should meaningfully shape the learning experience.

Guidance should adapt.

Strong teaching moves between directive and non-directive practice, offering structure when it is useful and autonomy when learners are ready to exercise it.

Education is never neutral.

Curricula, technologies, and institutions distribute authority. Teaching should help learners recognize those arrangements and develop the judgment to question them.

An evolving pedagogical practice

No single lens is large enough for learning.

My foundation in psychology initially drew me toward behaviourism and its empirical account of learning. That lens remains useful, but it cannot explain the whole learner. My philosophy expanded to include cognitive development, social constructivism, humanistic education, and critical pedagogy.

I understand students as active, self-determining participants in their education. Their prior knowledge is not an obstacle to instruction; it is the material from which meaningful learning begins. Inclusion therefore requires more than access. It requires teaching that can respond to different histories, strengths, needs, and ways of making sense.

In practice, I move between directive and non-directive teaching. Some moments call for clear modelling, feedback, and structure. Others call for inquiry, dialogue, and productive autonomy. The responsibility of the educator is to judge which form of support enables the learner to move forward.

Education should enlarge a learner's capacity to act—not simply improve their capacity to comply.

The future of education

Education should develop judgment, not only utility.

I remain concerned by educational models that reduce learning to employability, efficiency, or measurable output. The humanities matter because they cultivate interpretation, moral reasoning, historical awareness, and the ability to examine the assumptions a society has learned to treat as natural.

Artificial intelligence makes this work more urgent. Digital systems now participate in the production, organization, and circulation of knowledge. They influence what becomes visible, whose expertise appears legitimate, and which forms of action institutions make possible.
